The Books I Think My Cat Would Like
she can't read yet, but knowing her, it's just a matter of time
Hey friends! Any of you who have been around for pretty much any amount of time have surely picked up on the fact that I am the proud mama to the best cat in the world, Jenny. (No apologies for that wildly convoluted sentence here!) She’s a little gray tuxedo that Dustin and I fostered for two whole days in May 2020 before we gave in to her perfect little pink nose and mismatched white socks and decided to keep her forever.
Needless to say, we haven’t looked back since.
I assume there are some people out there who don’t talk about their cats like they’re human children; I’m not interested in spending time with those people! Jenny is absolutely the light of both Dustin’s and my life, and even though she occasionally attacks my feet under the covers and throws up on the carpet (ALWAYS the carpet, even though there’s only one carpeted room in the entire house), I can’t imagine my life without her.
The thing about Jenny is that she and I spend a lot of time together, but in her mind, I’m still way too distracted by parts of the world that aren’t, well, her. When I’m not waking up fast enough in the morning, she’s been known to pull down my covers with one paw and hit me in the face with the other. (It’s loving, I swear.) She’s knocked my phone out of my hand on more than one occasion, and stands on my keyboard when she thinks I’ve been working long enough (which is generally about ten minutes in to my morning.)
Generally speaking, all adorable and welcome diversions. But when I’m reading and she tries to knock the book away? No way, girlfriend! So in order to stop my cat from destroying my literacy, here are a few books I think SHE would love, to help her realize what a joy reading is.
PURRMAIDS by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen
I don’t care that these are early reader books for children, I think they might be the greatest literary accomplishments of our day. I don’t even remember how I discovered the Purrmaids series, but once I did, I became immediately obsessed with the half cat, half mermaid, which is actually a half cat, half fish, AKA a catfish, but logic doesn’t matter in the purrmaids universe! You either know a child who needs this book or need to pick it up yourself to heal your inner child. Jenny is going to be obsessed with it. The book above is the latest in the series, coming out this summer to coincide with the Olympics; please don’t ask how the one cat’s leotard is going under its tail, because it’s too horrifying to think about.
A CAT CAFE CHRISTMAS by Cody Gary
I know, I’m a huge seasonal reader who won’t read a Christmas book in the spring, but luckily, Jenny has no concept of the Christian calendar so for her it’s all gravy, baby. This hate to love romance set in a cat cafe that needs to be saved (of course it does!!) is an absolute heartstopping delight that will make you laugh, swoon, and probably adopt twenty or thirty cats.
DASHED by, well, me!
What can I say? Jenny’s a total Mama’s girl!
That’s all for this week, friends - I’ve got some fun travel and some fun news coming up in the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime, holds your cats close (and your enemies closer??? IDK, Jenny told me to write that part. She’s a monster.)
Peace, love, and all the books,
Amanda
